As Serious as the Pandemic May Be, Today I just Want to Celebrate

Yes, the Covid-19 virus keeps propagating across the world in general and across the US in particular. Yes, the world economy is basically heading towards an ominous stand still. And, yes, the Asshat in Chief keeps spewing assholistic, self-gratifying propaganda from a podium at the White House.

But none of that takes a single grain of beauty away from the impressive land and seascapes we may sometimes be exposed to, particularly on a sunny day like today.

Beauty is often associated with love, whether the beauty be human, artistic or natural. From that point of view, the Aegean Sea was today giving away bushels of love to whoever had the chance and the will to stop for a while to contemplate it, and I was one of them.

For whatever reason, a couple of small fishing boats going out and coming into the port, sent my imagination in flight some three thousand years back in time and for a moment I could picture some Phoenician seafarers coming in their sailboats to trade their near-eastern and Egyptian goods with the locals.

Phoenicians seem to have been Semitic people who inhabited the area of Syria, Palestine and Lebanon between the years 1,500 and 300 B.C. and are now well known in some mythical and historical tales for their adventurous spirit and their ingenuity.

But there was a bit more to my reveries than just Phoenician boats. While sitting on a small seawall by the seaside, enjoying a glass of Rosé wine (take-out only) I kept feeling good enough as to remember a song called “I Just Want to Celebrate”, which the group “Rare Earth” released back around 1971.

The song is not a particularly impressive piece of songwriting, but it is still a nice, happy one. I just thought the song was perfectly in tune with the seascape before me and with the mood I was in, so I decided to share it with you. The following are some of the lyrics to it:

“I just want to celebrate another day of livin'
I just want to celebrate another day of life

I put my faith in the people
But the people let me down
So I turned the other way
And I carry on, anyhow

I just want to celebrate another day of livin'
I just want to celebrate another day of life

Well, I can't be bothered with sorrow
And I can't be bothered with hate, no, no
I'm using up the time but feeling fine, every day
That is why I'm telling you

I just want to celebrate another day
Oh, I just want to celebrate another day of livin'
I just want to celebrate another day of life”
