A Blatant Mockery of American Justice and a Crude Insult to the American People

Allegories and parables aside, presenting a case in a way that personalizes the facts can make the reader or listener feel directly involved in the subject at hand, thereby easing communication between teller and listener/reader. With this idea in mind, kindly consider the following.

Picture that a good friend of yours was ran over by an SUV while walking on the sidewalk in front of a gas station. Picture that a few customers at the gas station saw the SUV drive onto the sidewalk and hit your friend. Picture also that a couple of customers even saw the face of the individual driving the SUV.

Now picture that during the fact-finding investigations, the prosecutor’s office was not able to get the testimony of the customers who saw the face of the driver. They only got the testimony of those customers identifying the SUV who also declared that it was indeed that SUV the one that hit your dear friend.

Your friend was not fatally injured, but might end up suffering health consequences for the rest of his life. Meanwhile, the prosecutor’s office has already identified the owner of the SUV and has already formally charged him with the crime of hit and run.

And now picture that the jury for the trial has already been selected, but even before the trial begins, the jury’s foreperson and some other members of the jury have openly declared to the press that they don’t intend to be impartial during the trial, as they have already decided that the accused is innocent. To top it all, they have also decided they don't want to listen to the testimony of the two individuals who actually saw the face of the SUV driver.

Wouldn’t you think that such hypothetical trial would be just a mockery of justice? Wouldn’t you think that the hypothetical foreperson’s attitude and that of some other jurors would be just a blatant insult to the people of that community?

But, alas! The serious injury to the idea of justice presented in this hypothetical case pales in severity to the real-life case currently unfolding in the US Senate, where the leader of the Republican majority, Mitch McConnell, along with other veteran, influential Republican senators such as Lindsey Graham, have openly declared before the TV cameras that they don’t have the slightest intention of being impartial in the Impeachment trial currently pending against the President of the United States.

“The President is not guilty of any of the two charges presented against him”, they say, those charges being abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, so they are determined to obstruct by all means that the prosecutors bring Mick Mulvaney and John Bolton to the witness stand, even as John Bolton has already said he would be willing to testify if subpoenaed. In case you haven’t made the connection yet, Bolton and Mulvaney would be equivalent to the guys who actually saw the face of the driver in the SUV example previously presented.

In other words, McConnell and Graham might as well have said “we stand by our guy no matter what and justice be dammed”. And please note that such blatant insult to the idea of American justice has repeatedly been inflicted on the nation in the wide-open presence of the international media, for the whole wide world to hear and see.

Wouldn’t this be a clear-cut example of a kangaroo court? If this is ever allowed to happen, how will the United States ever again be entitled to take the moral high ground and accuse any other country of having a corrupt judicial or legislative system when some of its own highest elected officials mock the idea of American justice in such a shameless manner?

But, then again, the way things are going, and ever since Donald Trump was “elected” to the presidency, the United States government has increasingly disassociated itself from traditional western ideals such as justice for all, respect for the truth, etc.

“There is more than one way to skin a cat”, says the saying, and certainly there is more than one way to put a nation on the path to ruin. Just ask the great majority of members of the Republican Party, as they seem to have found a very sure way to put the country to shame.

May the universal forces protect our beloved United States of America from its enemies, foreign and domestic, but most urgently from the domestic ones.

May you all be well.
